[sunday quiz] 10 more mystery countries
This country is tiny – virtually a city on the end of a peninsula – and it is ruled with a rod of iron. Long hair, drugs and crime are not allowed. It is a country of business and one of the richest in the region. Its Prime Minister was heavily criticized for his draconian measures but the country is prosperous and stable. It is difficult to breathe the air there.
This country is constantly living in danger – a geological fault line runs north south across its middle. It has spectacular mountains and hot springs and its capital is known for its white architecture and the multi-coloured roofs of its houses. It spends half the year under wet snow.
This country has many engineers, especially automotive, and likes causing wars which it doesn’t win. For centuries it was not even a country – it was a series of dukedoms, under one loose banner. In the south is a beautiful forest and it has many beautiful castles.
It is long and thin and near the coast. It actually elected a communist leader years ago and is next door to a country whose colours are light blue and white. It might sound cold but in fact it crosses many climactic regions from warm to cool.
This country had an Empire which it gradually lost and now it has problems with people from the outlying parts of that Empire wanting to come to the Mother Country to live. It is known for its dry sense of humour and eccentricity and for its schools and universities but not for its cooking.
This country is long and sprawls across many islands, as well as half of another big island it disputes with its large southern neighbour. Bombings there have tarnished its image of exotic South East Asia. It has recently been quite wet and has lost many people.
An island nation in the Pacific, this country in the last few years has lost its reputation as the idyllic French getaway and there has been local unrest, as there has been on the surrounding islands.
This country is hot and has an aging leader whom half the world accepts and the other half thinks is a madman who sponsors terrorists. It was the scene of huge battles in the Second World War, mainly between the Australians and Germans. From its desert you could sail across the large sea to Europe.
This country also has an aging leader and is famous for its cigars and lovely beaches. It is a very poor country under its system of government and it was nearly place for the start of World War 3 in 1962.

New Caledonia is an archipelago, and the main island is called "Grande Terre". New Caledonia is not as island, as your question stated.
